‘Get Real’ Hip Hop and Production Workshops
Glebe Youth Service is a non-government youth service dedicated to the recreation and support of young people who live, work, study or play in the Glebe area. The majority of young people that attend the service are from the Glebe Housing Estate. Most are Aboriginal and many come from backgrounds that have left them with serious disadvantage.

In early 2008 Dan initiated a programme at GYS called ‘Get Real’. Twice a week Dan runs workshops and engages in a training and mentoring programme for the young people who drop into the centre focussed on writing and producing HipHop music. The Programme has been well received and acclaimed for it’s success with several participants experiencing extremely positive outcomes from the programme. One of the groups; the 'Str8 Ballaz', has made a video for a song they produced through the programme which can be viewed here viewed here.

FBi Radio Production Training
Whilst at FBi Dan developed a training course for volunteers interested in radio production.
The four week course covered:
  • Fundamentals of Sound
  • Production Roles and Responsibilites
  • Compression techniques
  • Equalisation techniques
  • Vocal Session Production
  • Bed Construction
  • Automated Mixing
  • Ear Training
The course also included weekly assignments and 'feedback' sessions to evaluate and discuss each student's work. At the end of the course, many of the volunteers moved directly into specific production roles for the station, resulting in a considerably expanded production capability for the station.

Below are excerpts from the (anonymous) Course and Teacher evaluation forms the students completed at the end of the course.

"... the detail was great. Actual assignments - TOPS! Great feedback - [Dan] recognised individual strengths and weaknesses!"

"Clear and decisive descriptions of fundamental practices."

"Going through the basics of sound first to give you a good foundation for the rest. Getting thrown in the deep end a bit at the end - best way to learn!"

"Learning everything that I always wanted to learn about sound and sound design. Hands on experience and feedback."

"Directly related to my life at the moment and - good. Great Greatness!"

The Training Course Notes are available as a PDF download from the 'Resources and Downloads' page of this site.
